Habitat photo (A) of Oryza longistaminata from Madagascar where it forms a dense stand in a natural wetland. The flower (B) is characterized by its very long stamens, and it is the only rhizome-bearing species in the AA genome; horizontal rhizomes are indicated by yellow arrowheads and blue arrowheads indicate vertical ramets (C). The leaves are superhydrophobic (D) and retain a thin gas film during submergence facilitating gas exchange (CO2 and O2) with the floodwater (Colmer and Pedersen 2008).
